Cameroonian-German striker Noel Futkeu delivered a match-winning hat-trick on Sunday to drag SpVgg Greuther Fürth out of the relegation zone in Germany's second division, scoring all three goals in a dramatic 3-2 home victory over promotion hopefuls Darmstadt 98.
A One-Man Rescue Act
The 23-year-old forward, who has now scored 15 goals this season, twice pulled Fürth back from behind to secure three vital points. Lidberg gave Darmstadt the lead in the 37th minute, but Futkeu levelled from the penalty spot four minutes later. When Furukawa restored the visitors' advantage in the 77th minute, Futkeu again equalised with time running out. His third and decisive goal came deep into stoppage time, in the 94th minute, to send the home crowd into raptures.
Futkeu Climbs the Scoring Charts
The hat-trick propelled Futkeu to second place in the Bundesliga 2 top scorers' standings. Speaking after the final whistle, the striker was measured but clearly satisfied. "I know my importance to the team," he said. "A day like today doesn't come around often, but it came at a very good moment. We are on 14th place now, but that doesn't mean we can afford to relax." The result lifts Fürth off the bottom three and up to 14th position in the table.
