MABANDA Makes History As First Cameroonian Film To Win Major AMVCA Film Category

After years of limited recognition and category exclusion, Cameroon cinema has officially entered a new era — and MABANDA just opened the door.

For years, Cameroonian filmmakers kept knocking on the doors of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, but the system was never fully built for Central Africa. While West, East, and Southern Africa had dedicated Indigenous Film categories, Cameroon and the wider Central African region were left floating in between recognition and invisibility.

Now, that story has changed.

At the 2026 edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, history was finally written when MABANDA became the FIRST Cameroonian-produced film to win an official AMVCA Best Film category recognition for a Cameroonian movie.
